"Peeling the onion" is such an overused metaphor that I hesitate to repeat it here. But it suits private air travel so well that I simply can't resist.

Air charter is the Rodney Dangerfield of private aviation. Operators can thank the FAA and fractional-aircraft companies for this. Don't get me wrong. Some charter operators don't deserve any respect, but there are certainly many more who do. The problem for the consumer is how to differentiate the good from the bad and the ugly.

You have to feel sorry for the airlines. The industry is well past its Golden Years, whenever they were. Some say they were in the 1930s, others in the '50s or '60s. Certainly, these years, which always look better with hindsight, were before the days of deregulation, which began in 1978.

As I read Jeff Wieand's Taxes, Laws and Finance column, "Your Gray-haired Pilot", I realized that had I not left the cockpit for a writing career in the 1990s, I would now be that pilot, gray hair and all.

Eclipse Aviation is going through painful times. In March, the builder of the $1.6 million Eclipse 500 very light jet announced it had to change avionics suppliers. Separately, Eclipse Aviation and United Airlines "mutually agreed to terminate their pilot training program," according to the manager of training development for United's flight training division.
