"We like to keep a low profile for our jet use." I can't tell you how many times I've heard variations on that line since I arrived at Business Jet Traveler in 2004. It has been a constant challenge to find business jet owners and passengers willing to be profiled in our pages and companies that will go on the record about their use of private aviation.

During my journalism career, I’ve interviewed everyone from Bruce Springsteen (back when he could walk down the street unrecognized) to a Ku Klux Klan leader (who was arrested on kidnapping and weapons charges soon after we met). But none of my interviews have been more fascinating than the ones I’ve conducted with prominent bizav users at Business Jet Traveler.

For readers, one good thing about Business Jet Traveler and its sister publications is our independence. We’re not owned by a company that manufactures or operates aircraft, nor are we beholden to any trade association. Just as important, we don’t let advertisers influence our coverage. We need them, of course, to pay the bills and make a profit.

Most of the time, business aviation makes air travel painless and trouble-free. That's what you're paying for and that's why you love it.

President Obama had barely concluded his June 29 press conference when my e-mail box began filling up with responses from the general-aviation industry. The National Business Aviation Association expressed “dismay” and announced that it was sending a “strongly worded” letter to the President about his remarks, which it said “reflect a total lack of understanding” of the field.

As you've probably read, NetJets chairman and CEO David Sokol resigned abruptly from that company and parent firm Berkshire Hathaway on March 28, after questions arose about his purchase of stock in a firm that Berkshire subsequently offered to buy.
