In the same week in June, several airlines announced they would be grounding airplanes, reducing capacity and eliminating jobs, mainly because of soaring fuel prices. Meanwhile, the Stanford Transportation Group, a San Francisco-based consulting firm, reported the results of its biennial analysis of premium passenger activity in the U.S. airline and business aviation markets.

VLJ technology centers on a new generation of engines and avionics that can give little jets very big jet capability and good fuel economy at reduced weights. At 400 mph at 41,000 feet, a typical twin-engine VLJ burns less than 100 gallons per hour. Fully loaded, all of these airplanes weigh less, sometimes a lot less, than 10,000 pounds.

Landmark Aviation has added Jimsair Aviation Services to its FBO network, giving it a total of 42 facilities in the U.S., Canada and Western Europe. The deal also included an air charter service formerly operated by Jimsair, as well as Lindy Premier Inflight Catering, located on the FBO premises and also previously under Jimsair management.

Britain's all-business-class carrier Silverjet ceased operations in May, becoming the third such airline to collapse within six months. MAXjet launched service in November 2005 and ceased operations in December 2007. Eos, which began service a month before MAXjet, lased just four months longer, filing for bankruptcy in April 2008.

Cleveland-based fractional provider Flight Options has named Kenn Ricci chairman. Mike Silvestro, meanwhile, becomes CEO, replacing S. Michael Scheeringa. Additional management changes at the company are anticipated, according to industry sources.Ricci returns to Flight Options 10 years after founding the company and six years after selling it to Raytheon Corp.
