The 1932 Piper Cub sold for $1,300 and embodied everything Bill Piper thought an airplane should be: affordable to own and operate, simple, rugged and fun to fly. You can land it in a short farm field, a small lake or a tiny patch of gravel in the middle of a river. For many a bush pilot today, the Piper Cub remains the ride of choice for these reasons. There’s no drama here.

He is perhaps best known for playing Captain James Kirk on the 1960s television series Star Trek and in more than half a dozen of the like-titled motion pictures that followed. He later served as the omnipresent discount-travel Priceline pitchman and portrayed the lovable lout lawyer Denny Crane on the TV series Boston Legal, for which he won two Emmys and a Golden Globe award. Turn on your television anytime in recent years and there he was, holding court on his cable interview show Raw Nerve, cooing over antiques with the History Channel guys on American Pickers, roasting bad-boy actor Charlie Sheen on Comedy Central, reading Sarah Palin’s Tweets as poetry parody on The Tonight Show, appearing on the CBS sitcom $h*! My Dad Says, awakening the crew of the Space Shuttle Discovery on their final mission or presenting a country music award.

Fractional aircraft ownership is a great American entrepreneurial idea that arguably hasn't traveled well. Fifteen years after its main proponent, NetJets, brought the concept to Europe, that company remains the only one to have achieved any lasting traction in the international markets that supposedly have a massive appetite for business aviation.

What if there were no airlines? It may sound crazy, but now-retired rogue aeronautical engineer Burt Rutan once speculated that, someday, people might look back and say, "For a short period in history, people traveled en masse in giant airplanes called 'airliners.' They only used a very few crowded runways, and traveling to and from the airports often took longer than the flight itself." In Rutan's version of the future, we would further develop the general aviation infrastructure such that people could fly on light airplanes to and from the thousands of small airports near their homes and destinations.
