Union League Golf Club hole 17
One of Philadelphia’s crown jewels is sporting a new gem. Actually, an old one, since what used to be Torresdale-Frankford Country Club dates to a 1921 design by Donald Ross. Today it’s part of the Union League, the prestigious downtown club founded in 1862 whose South Broad Street home offers a classic example of Second Empire architecture.

Wickenburg, Arizona, population 6,500, still looks much like the gold-mining town it was in the 1800s. It sits somewhere between faux and retro, 70 miles northwest of downtown Phoenix in the foothills of the Sonoran Desert. Prospecting for precious metals takes a curious combination of nerve and deep pockets. The same could be said these days for golf course development, especially when it entails an extensive real estate component. The impetus to build Wickenburg Ranch came from two veterans of the Arizona golf development scene, though this is the first time that William Brownlee and Wendell Pickett have dared to co-design a golf course and undertake an entire project on their own.

The Golf Club at Fiddler's Creek is set between Collier Seminole State Park and McIIvane Bay.
There aren’t many small towns that exude the culture and elegance of an urbane city. Perhaps that’s why people flock to downtown Naples, on the Gulf Coast of southwest Florida. Fifth Avenue there is rightly famous for its bistros, high-end clothing and jewelry shops and casually upscale lifestyle. Yet the area’s appeal is also because of what lies immediately beyond and around it: a golf-rich region, with low-lying courses set against a backdrop of untouched native habitats and wetland preserves.

A century ago, Nebraska’s greatest novelist, Willa Cather, gave voice to the raw nature and overwhelming scale of the state’s landscape. No one who has ever read her books, O Pioneer! (1913) or My Ántonia (1918), would mistake them for golf writing. But in drawing attention to the stark beauty and unremitting power of Nebraska’s vast open spaces, she identifies what makes a place like the Prairie Club so compelling.
