The Golf Club at Briar's Creek

A languid, expansive quality pervades South Carolina Lowcountry marsh and it’s on display at the Golf Club at Briar’s Creek.

The 900-acre property sits in the middle of classic Intracoastal wetlands, 18 miles southwest of downtown Charleston. Massive live oaks drape the approach road, and even when you’re on the site you feel as if the land hasn’t changed in a hundred years. That’s because the Rees Jones-designed golf course exists in its own world, unencumbered by housing and with long views of nothing but fertile swamp grass, marshland and tidal estuary.

With six tees on every hole, the par-72 layout can play anywhere from 4,818 yards up to 7,117. Good thing, too, what with wetlands hazards lapping in along and across many of the holes, nowhere with more drama and heart-pounding effect than on the par-3 17th hole, which plays from 115 yards up to 235 yards across the hazard to a bulkheaded island of a putting surface.

Bike paths, hiking trails, lakes and creek beds enable members and guests here to enjoy an abundance of wildlife at the state’s first Certified Audubon Signature Sanctuary. And an elegant, understated shingle-style clubhouse and guest cottages present a rustic focal point to a property where the golf seems to rise out of the mist each morning and settle back in each night.
