International Aircraft Dealers Association

The International Aircraft Dealers Association serves as the standards and accrediting body for the aircraft sales and leasing transaction industry. As of July 2021, its membership consisted of 55 accredited dealers, more than 150 aircraft brokers, 85 products and services members, and eight airplane manufacturers.

Responding to the number of unscrupulous and unknowledgeable brokers in the aircraft sales business at the time, representatives from eight companies met in 1991 to create a code of ethics. In the process, these companies—Duncan Aviation, Gantt Aviation, JBA Aviation, Leading Edge, General Aviation Services, Ogarajets, NetJets’ QS Partners, and Eagle Aviation—established the National Aircraft Resale Association (NARA). 

Then as now, the group added new members only after they’d met rigorous standards and agreed to adhere to the code of ethics and undergo re-accreditation audits every three years. Third-party firm Joseph Allan, LLC, currently administers the accreditation process. 

By 2012, the association had grown to 60 members, including associate members that serve and work with the preowned aircraft industry but are not brokers or dealers. That year, the group also added two new points to its code of ethics. The association officially changed its name in 2018 to reflect the international domination of preowned aircraft sales. 

IADA members buy and sell more business aircraft by dollar volume than the rest of the world’s non-member dealers combined, averaging more than 1,100 transactions and $10 billion in annual volume. In the COVID-19 pandemic period from April 1, 2020, through March 31, 2021, IADA members registered more than 1,200 global transactions worth more than $10 billion. 

In 2019, IADA launched an online marketplace at AircraftExchange.com. A search portal that allows only IADA-accredited dealers to list preowned aircraft for sale, AircraftExchange facilitated 615 transactions worth more than $5.4 billion in its first year, accounting for approximately 60 percent of all preowned aircraft sales worldwide.

The IADA Foundation, which earned 501(c)(3) tax-exempt nonprofit status in 2019, provides scholarships valued between $1,000 and $5,000 to full-time undergraduate and graduate business aviation students at 20 colleges and universities in the U.S. The association also provides online continuing education for members through its IADA U platform.
